Private Camera with Encrypted Storage on iPhone
A private camera inside an encrypted vault saves new photos and videos directly into that app’s storage instead of first adding them to Apple Photos. In Hide Photos, captured media goes into the local encrypted vault. That avoids an initial camera-roll copy, but you still need to manage sharing, credentials and backups.

How this differs from hiding a photo afterward
The normal Camera-to-Photos workflow creates an item in your Photos library. You can then hide it using Apple’s Hidden album, which is a convenient built-in option with authentication on supported iOS versions. An in-app private camera changes the destination at capture time instead.
The important question is where the saved copy goes. A private camera does not make a photo invisible to everyone or prevent someone from seeing an unlocked screen. It is a way to keep selected captures separate from your normal library.
How to take a photo directly into the vault
- Open and unlock the vault where you want the new media to live. Use its built-in private camera rather than the ordinary iPhone Camera app. Entry labels may vary by app version.
- Allow camera access when iOS asks. Video capture may also require microphone permission for sound; review permissions in iPhone Settings if capture is unavailable.
- Take a harmless test photo, return to the vault and open the saved result. Try a short video too if that is part of your intended workflow.
- Check Apple Photos to confirm that your test capture was not automatically added there. This is a check of your installed workflow, not a claim about other camera apps.
- Lock the vault and unlock it again to check access. Create and test an encrypted backup before using the workflow for irreplaceable captures.
Where encrypted capture ends and sharing begins
In Hide Photos: Secret Album, private-camera photos and videos are saved in the locally encrypted vault rather than automatically added to Apple Photos. Vault storage uses AES-GCM and a separate vault PIN. Optional Face ID depends on vault settings; it is unavailable while a decoy vault is enabled according to the documented management screen.
Explicitly sharing or exporting an individual photo can hand a readable copy to your chosen app or service. Treat that destination as a separate copy with its own data practices. An encrypted vault backup is a different operation from sharing a viewable photo.
Troubleshooting private capture
- Camera unavailable: Review the app’s camera permission in iPhone Settings and return to the app’s camera.
- Video has no sound: Check microphone permission and try a short sample recording.
- Missing capture: Confirm which vault you unlocked and that capture completed. Check device storage before recording a long video.
- A copy appeared in Photos: Check whether you used the system Camera or explicitly exported the item. Verify the source before deleting any copy.
Frequently asked questions
Does this need full access to Apple Photos?
Direct camera capture and importing existing photos are different permissions. The in-app camera uses camera access and may request microphone access for video; importing uses the Photos access you grant through iOS.
Does the private camera upload to iCloud Photos?
It does not automatically add captures to Apple Photos, so those captures are not added to iCloud Photos through that route. This is separate from your device-backup settings or a backup file you choose to save in iCloud Drive.
Can I take private videos too?
Yes. The existing app documentation describes direct photo and video capture. Test a short recording and playback in your installed version before relying on it.
Can I use it without a connection?
Capturing and viewing locally saved media do not require downloading a Photos original. Test the installed camera workflow in airplane mode. Downloads, purchases, analytics and selected cloud backup destinations are separate network operations.
Will deleting the app keep my captures safe?
Do not assume so. These files live in the app’s storage. Keep a compatible encrypted backup outside the source app and test restore before deleting or reinstalling it.
