How to Move an Encrypted Photo Vault to a New iPhone

A local photo vault does not necessarily move with your ordinary Apple Photos library. Before changing iPhones, make a portable encrypted backup and prove that it can be restored.

Why normal photo sync may not be enough

iCloud Photos manages media stored in your Photos library. A private vault may hold a separate encrypted copy inside its own app storage. That copy may not appear in Apple Photos or migrate the same way. Never assume the vault is synchronized just because the rest of your photo library is.

A five-step checklist

  1. Update and unlock your old vault. Confirm you can still access the important photos and videos.
  2. Create an encrypted export. Use the app's backup or export function, if available. Save the backup file somewhere you control, such as Files, an external drive, or a chosen file provider.
  3. Keep the correct credentials. A portable encrypted backup may require its original PIN or recovery information. Face ID on a new iPhone is not a replacement for that secret.
  4. Restore on the new device. Install the vault app and choose its supported import or restore flow. UI wording varies by version.
  5. Verify before wiping the old phone. Check a few photos, videos, albums and notes, including large files. Keep a second backup until you're confident everything transferred.

Hide Photos: Secret Album backup approach

Hide Photos: Secret Album supports a user-controlled encrypted backup file intended to be restored using the correct PIN. The developer does not run a cloud service that can recover your vault contents for you. Check your installed version and plan for the backup limits or Pro features available to you.

For details on how encryption and portability are designed, read the Hide Photos: Secret Album security page.

Common transfer mistakes

  • Deleting the old app before confirming a working backup.
  • Forgetting the backup PIN or assuming Face ID alone is enough.
  • Exporting only thumbnails or a subset of albums.
  • Placing the backup in a location you can't access on the new iPhone.
  • Confusing an encrypted vault backup with a regular iCloud Photos sync.

What if you've already deleted the app?

Recovery depends on whether you have a compatible backup and the required credentials. A privacy-focused developer who does not hold your keys generally cannot regenerate lost encrypted files. Avoid any recovery service that promises guaranteed access without knowing how the encryption works.
