How to clean up iPhone photos

A good photo cleanup starts with a review plan, not a one-tap delete button. Here's a slower, safer approach to freeing space.

Check where storage is going

Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage and look at Photos. If iCloud Photos and Optimize iPhone Storage are enabled, the storage shown on your device may differ from your full cloud library size.

Start with easy categories

Review screenshots you no longer need, screen recordings, accidental captures, and old large videos. Confirm that files aren't needed for receipts, work, or future reference.

Review similar shots side by side

Several photos of the same scene may look alike but differ in focus, expression, or detail. Keep the best ones and avoid treating every visually similar photo as a duplicate.

Use a deliberate swipe review

LumoKeep helps you move through your library, mark unwanted shots, and review your selection before deletion. Keep your favorite memories without relying on automatic bulk decisions.

Check Recently Deleted and backups

Photos deleted from Apple's library can remain in Recently Deleted for a period of time. If iCloud Photos is enabled, deletion can sync to other devices. Make sure important originals are backed up before permanently removing them.

Note: iOS menus and behavior may change across versions. Confirm the options shown on your device.
